Stoned in American Samoa!!!!
Once Julie & I had gotten ourselves finally checked in in American Samoa we decided to take a walk to the grocery store about a couple of miles away.
We noticed along the way that as we left one small settlement and
entered the next one there were a number of painted stones along the side of the
road. In the village we walked out of they were blue & the one we walked
into they were white.
We really didn't think much about it until our new made friend Mitch
explained to us that the stones mark each villages territory. I guess last week
there was a huge "Fist Fight" on shore between the two groups. He
thought the "Blue Stone" guys lost because their stones got thrown
into the ocean and had not been replaced. The moral of the story is don't get
stoned in Samoa.
As Mitch was telling us this story, someone on shore was banging a "Gong". This he explained marked the start of "Sa". Sa lasts about 15 minutes and during this time you must stop doing everything!!!! There are Sa police in white shirts and they will make you sit down on the sidewalk if you are walking by.
I guess this practice started with the missionaries who tried to bring religion to the islands. They decided that at 6PM every evening the Samoans would get "frisky" and start doing the "Wild Thing". They figured Sa would stop the problem and control the population.
All I know is Julie is all for banging the gong!!!!
THIS NO SHIT!!!
