radicalconstruction32 * This is looking straight down into the chain locker. It has been allcleaned up and painted. It is accessible from the deck and sealed off from the main cabin of the boat. Here we installed supports for 2 propane tanks and put in lines aft to the galley. * 1796 x 1156 * (1.93MB)
radicalconstruction33 * The chain in the locker. * 1785 x 1199 * (2.0MB)
radicalconstruction34 * Oct '98. This is the deck of the pilothouse. We decided to install an opening hatch - below here is the galley and nav area, so we needed more ventilation. First, we had to make a level platform for the hatch. * 888 x 596 * (173KB)
radicalconstruction35 * Ed mixes West epoxy to a paste like peanut butter. Then, using sticks of plywood for a guide, he fills in the gaps. * 768 x 506 * (153KB)
radicalconstruction36 * Next he places a piece of plywood (cut out before the epoxy was started!) down onto the epoxy and squishes it down flat and level. The strip of wood on top of the plywood is simply a temporary handle. * 768 x 556 * (150KB)

radicalconstruction37 * Then all the edges were radiused and faired with West System, followed by primer and AwlGrip paint to match the deck. This stayed this way all winter. * 906 x 595 * (145KB)
radicalconstruction38 * Apr '99. Finally, in the spring, Ed took the Sawzall and cut out the hole for the hatch. * 816 x 594 * (136KB)
radicalconstruction39 * The hatch is installed. Still to be done is the finishing for the hatch opening inside the boat. * 876 x 600 * (143KB)
radicalconstruction40 * Apr '99. We had to make a place for the cockit instruments. This is the cockpit, looking forward, and was a nice flat place to sink an instrument panel. * 891 x 595 * (113KB)
radicalconstruction41 * We cut a big hole in the boat. You can see the companionway just to the right. The big hole leads into the aft cabin. * 810 x 570 * (99KB)

radicalconstruction42 * On the inside, we used the same technique as the hatch, with the West Epoxy, and stuck a piece pf plywood on. The 3 holes are for the wiring for the instruments. * 881 x 595 * (135KB)
radicalconstruction43 * The exterior was faired with West, and the edges radiused smooth. * 749 x 592 * (115KB)
radicalconstruction44 * Followed by primer and paint. As you can see, we should have done this BEFORE we painted the deck, but we didn't think of it at the time. Consequently, you can see the line betweent he old paint and the new. Well, nobody's perfect. * 671 x 589 * (95KB)
radicalconstruction45 * Now for the inside finishing. Here, on the inside, is the plywood board. Ed has ground away all around it with the mini grinder, so that we can get a good bond with the fiberglass to follow. * 717 x 559 * (113KB)
radicalconstruction46 * Julie layed on 6 layers of glass so that if a big wave hits the bulkhead, we won't have a flood! * 736 x 592 * (116KB)
