Galapagos to Marquesas March 21 to April 12 2002

The passage:

We used Jimmy Cornell’s World Cruising Routes waypoints and this worked out well.

Be prepared to motor through the areas of calm near the Galapagos – we motored 35 hours then picked up wind. Or if you are patient, you can drift along at 1-2 knots with the current till you get wind.

Beginning of our trip was with a 1-2 knot favorable current and light/variable winds then switched to SE10-15 with 1 knot current – we were broad reaching at this point. Then South east from there.

We bought an old Yankee from a CSY44 and flew it beside out jib as twins but it only lasted 12 hours then the spinnaker halyard chafed through and the sail flopped in the water. So much for our experiment with twins, but that is the way to go downwind.

The cruisers set up a radio net on USB 12365, and we checked on each other twice a day – position, wind and chat.

All in all, it was a much easier passage than we thought it would be, just very long and you have to look at it like a marathon and pace yourself, do nothing but eat, sleep and take care of the boat.
