Pigeon Cays is rated one of the top
snorkeling destinations in the world.
The reason – its indescribable beauty and remoteness, its
amazing abundance of marine life and the beauty of its undamaged
coral reef.
The Cays consist of three tiny sand islets studded with palm
trees and surrounded by reef. It is located well beyond
the remote eastern end of Roatan making it difficult for most
people to get to. In fact, Pigeon Cays is
one of those places where you have to have ideal weather to get
to. This means low wind because it is quite literally out
in the middle of nowhere, with no shelter from any surrounding
land. If for weather reasons Pigeon Cays
is not attainable we will fall back to snorkel two different
spots In Port Royal which are also great.
A trip to Pigeon Cays requires a full day, starting out from
Oakridge at or before 9AM. It is about a 3 hour sail to reach
this destination. Along the way we will describe the east end of
the island and its communities, have some snacks and
refreshments and enjoy the sun. We can throw out the fishing
lines and see if we can catch a nice fish!
Once there, we anchor on a sandy patch near the Cays.
You can snorkel right from the yacht, or we can dinghy you to
other snorkel spots nearby. The islands are not privately owned,
so you can go ashore, explore and enjoy the beach.
If you are
staying on the island for a vacation of a week or so, the best
way to get to this fabulous destination is to be flexible in
your plans so that we can pick the perfect day to go. If for
some reason the weather forecast changes and there turns out to
be too much wind to make Pigeon Cays comfortable, then we can
easily make it to Port Royal or Helene. These are also very
special out-of-the-way spots which few tourists (or even
residents!) ever get to see.
