HULL & DECK

Hull and Deck professional lay-up by Peter Karadi, Custom Yacht Builder, Whitby, Ontario, Canada.

Hull is one piece lay-up (not 2 halves) from plug. 1 ½ inch solid glass at keel to 1 inch at waterline. ½ inch glass encapsulates two 1.4 inch layers of perforated Airex foam from waterline to deck flange – 1 inch thick. ½ inch glass in hull sides continues on to form deck flange to 3 inches under deck. Note – where ‘layers of glass’ are referred to, each layer consists of one part 2 oz mat, and one part 24 oz roving.

Through Hulls – Bronze thru hulls, bronze valves are stayed to hull to prevent breaking.

Hull to Deck join is 10 layers of solid glass, 10” wide around deck flange. Aluminum extruded and anodized custom made toerail and fairleads (by Peter Karadi – Custom Yacht Builder). Attached every 4” with stainless steel bolts drilled through, filled with epoxy then redrilled to prevent water seepage into deck. All deck hardware is attached in the same manner.

Skeg and Rudder – Skeg is lined with ½ inch stainless steel plate, with a welded athwart ships saddle molded to inner hull, and longitudinal brace to Ύ inch bulkhead. Void in skeg is filled with solid poured glass. Purpose is to prevent damage in case keel is carried over an obstruction by a swell that may drop the skeg onto same. Skeg will also provide an excellent tow point if the vessel is grounded.

Rudder is skeg hung, with 3 inch stainless steel post. Post has welded levers glassed to one half of rudder, before other half molded on.

Keel is integral, 9700 lb of lead, cold fill and holt smelt. A total of 18 – Ύ inch keel bolts are also smelted into ballast. Their length is full depth of ballast. Lead is capped with 20 layers of glass. 10 each of these overlapping layers extend up each side of remaining keel slot area and up to 24 inches athwart ships. Plates and nuts are then mounted to protruding ends of the keel bolts and tightened onto the glass layers. 2 inch knees made of 1 ½ inch plywood and 5 layers of glass each side are glassed athwart ships and into remaining keel slot area approximately every 2 feet full with under salon sole. Bulkhead between salon and galley is also glassed down into keel slot. All is Ύ inch ply, limbered to sump area at rear of keel slot.

Chain plates and Knees – All plates are ½ inch x 2 inch stainless steel and approx 24” in length except forestay, which is fabricated from the same material but to fit the stem. All plates have a minimum of five ½ inch stainless steel bolts and are mounted with 1/8” stainless steel backing plates. Fore and aft stays mount to reinforced hull. Baby stay mounts to station bulkhead as do forward lower shrouds. Upper and rear lower shrouds mount to fabricated knees. Knees are approx 1 ½ in wide at deck and are glassed into hull vertically. Knees are Ύ” plywood with 5 layers glass each side of each knee.

Deck is Ύ” glass encapsulating Ύ inch balsa core, except plywood used at companionway – also by Peter Karadi.
