My wife (Julie Gifford) and myself (Ed Kettyle) have finished our
circumnavigation of the world on a sail boat. The adventure started about 1996 in
our home town of Peterborough Ontario Canada. We purchased a 44' Cartwright
cutter which was moved to our front yard in the subdivision we lived in. We
thought it would take a year to make the changes necessary to go to sea. It
ended up taking almost three years and heaps of money. Undaunted we continued on
accumulating over 10000 hours of work between us at night, weekends and holidays
We launched our boat at the Whitby Marina in Whitby Ontario during the summer of 1999 and continued working on rigging and sails etc there. We left October 10th 1999, crossing Lake Ontario to Oswego NY and entered the Erie Barge canal. Eventually we worked our way down the Hudson River to New York city. It was very cold so we pushed on, down the eastern United States coast to Miami and Key Biscayne.
The day before New Year's eve we crossed the Gulf Stream and headed for the Bahamas and George Town. During the next few years "Free Radical" traveled extensively in the Caribbean, going as far down as Venezuela and returning to the Windward & Leeward islands. Eventually we decided to transit the Panama Canal (2002). We visited Galapagos, Marquesas, Tuamotus, French Polynesia (Tahiti, Moorea, Raiatea, Bora Bora), American Samoa, Western Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, & Thailand. During the year of 2004 we crossed the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea Mediterranean and the cruised down the coast of North Africa to the Cape Verde's and finally crossed the Atlantic to St Martin. That completed our three and a half year circumnavigation.
September 2006 slowed down a bit accepting jobs Managing Mango Creek Lodge in Roatan Honduras. As of May 2008 we have stopped working for Mango Creek Lodge and moved around the corner. We are working full time on restoring Spirit of Free Radical a Privilege 47 Catamaran.
